You will learn about the foundations of the Canadian legal system, from the early roots in British common law to the modern Constitution and Charter of Rights and Freedoms. You will examine criminal, civil and contemporary legal topics as you become more aware of the presence of law within your daily lives and society around you.

What Will I Learn?

You will develop a clear understanding and appreciation for the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, not only knowing your rights as Canadians but why these rights are so significant.

You will examine the elements and processes of criminal law in Canada including what makes a crime a crime, what is needed to convict someone of a crime, and how criminal court cases are tried in Canada. Throughout this, you will look at a number of current and historical legal cases to help better understand the foundations of Canadian criminal law.

You will also examine civil law, and how it impacts us as citizens, families and as part of the business world. You will also have the opportunity to explore modern day legal challenges including those of technology, environmental and international law.

This course also has a dual credit options with Saskatchewan Polytechnic and Lakeland College.
