SaskDLC’s Class 5 Power Engineering Program Overview
This program involves students completing two 100-hour online courses - Power Engineering 20L and Power Engineering 30L. For students 21 years of age or younger, courses are free. For students who are 22 years of age or older, each course will cost $500. There are only 20 seats available for these courses and textbooks are not required to complete this course.
Both Power Engineering 20L (only available in semester 1) and 30L (only available in semester 2) consist of completing 50 hours of online theory and 50 hours of work study at both a SaskPower power plant and SaskPower’s mobile steam trailer – more details below. Students must have completed Power Engineering 20L before registering for Power Engineering 30L.
The work study portion of these courses have students attending one weekend (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday – 8 hours each day) at a SaskPower plant and one weekend (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday – 8 hours each day) at the SaskPower mobile steam trailer. Each day students will work with a SaskPower coordinator to complete a list of tasks outline on their student Passport. Students must have CSA steel-toed boots to attend the work study sessions. All other personal protective equipment (PPE) will be provided by SaskPower. Students are responsible to cover their own cost of travel, meals and accommodations.
After completing the program, students will receive a certificate of completion. Students will then need to book a time to write their provincial 5th Class Power Engineering Exam at the Technical Safety Authority of Saskatchewan (TSASK). TSASK is the provincial authority that certifies power engineers and the exam is approximately $110.
